Comparative Study Finds Equivalent Requirements among Nationally Recognized Physician Specialty Certifying Organizations
A comparative study of three nationally recognized physician multi-specialty board certifying organizations: American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS), and the American Osteopathic Association’s Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists (AOABOS), show that all three certifying bodies are equivalent to each other relative to certification and recertification requirements. The independent study, conducted by The Associated Industries of Florida Service Corporation (AIFSC), compared and contrasted the three organizations’ requirements for certification and recertification in the medical specialties that are common among the three organizations. “ABPS standards are demonstrably as rigorous, if not more rigorous, than that of the other board certifying bodies,” said William J. Carbone, Chief Executive Officer of ABPS and the American Association of Physician Specialists, Inc. “For example, ABPS is the first and only certifying body to require non-remedial medical ethics training as part of its physician recertification program.” Comparison Brochure
