Career Emergency Medicine Physicians are Encouraged to Demonstrate their Mastery of the Specialty

Emergency Medicine BCEMAs the healthcare industry has become increasingly specialized, patients have begun to pay closer attention to the credentials of the physicians who treat them. The reputation of a healthcare facility, in many cases, hinges on the verifiable expertise of the staff, which is why career emergency medicine physicians are strongly encouraged to consider pursuing board certification in their area of expertise. Savvy patients know to look for board certified physicians, even if they don’t completely and thoroughly understand what it takes to become board certified. Plus, if you are an EM physician who has spent your career in the emergency department, you deserve to be recognized for your experience through board certification.

The process of becoming board certified through the Board of Certification in Emergency Medicine® (BCEM) is rigorous but ensures that our Diplomates have successfully demonstrated their mastery of the core competencies required of an EM practitioner. And while a person who needs to visit the ER likely won’t spend much time researching physicians, it can be of great peace of mind to someone who learns that the hospital in their area has board certified physicians who have the training needed to offer top quality care, should they need it.

Another advantage to a physician pursuing board certification through the BCEM is that we offer free access to our online confirmation portal. Patients who are interested in confirming the credentials of a physician are welcome to visit our portal here. Information is key, and by having a clear understanding of the expertise of doctors in your community, you can have a clearer idea of where to turn when you’re in need of emergency care.

If you are an EM physician who has extensive experience in the emergency department of your hospital, you may be eligible for board certification through the BCEM. Contact us today to learn about our various eligibility requirements and the advantages of becoming board certified.

Patient Care Is Our Priority

Medical organizations throughout North America understand that our rigorous certification standards prove that ABPS Diplomates are capable of delivering the best patient care possible.

When I decided to pursue a full time role as a physician executive it was important to me to obtain additional professional training, education and work experience. Board certification through the ABPS in Administrative Medicine is validation of my efforts and a demonstration of dedication to professional development. We need more physicians to become full time health care executives, knowing there is a board certification option in Administrative Medicine encourages physicians to take the leap from full time clinical practice to healthcare organizational leadership.

The American Board of Physician Specialties has provided me with the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of internal medicine through board certification. As a hospitalist, board certification is an expected credential, and hospitals recognize the American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS) as one of the three standard credentialling bodies for Internal Medicine. Additionally, the ABPS has helped me develop leadership skills as a Board member and Committee Chairperson. ABPS has also helped me sharpen critical thinking skills as a test question developer and reviewer. The Allopathic (MD) and Osteopathic (DO) physicians in the ABPS are lifelong learners and frequently pursue multiple board certifications. I enjoy the camaraderie of my peers in ABPS.

When I think historically, advancement in medicine and patient safety and care has been driven by the diversity of people and scientific thought. That’s what I found at the ABPS and more. For over 60 years that is just who we are. I found a physician certifying body that provides a choice and voice to all physicians ensuring that patients are always placed first.
