The American Board of Physician Specialties® (ABPS) invites Diplomates of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) to recertify with the ABPS. Recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor as an ideal choice for physician board certification, we are one of the largest certifying bodies in North America. Our Diplomates practice a range of specialties at respected institutions across the United States, as well as Canada and Puerto Rico, and many ABPS Diplomates have confidently assumed leadership positions.

Why Physicians Seek Recertification With the ABPS

To become board certified with the ABPS, physicians must pass rigorous exams to prove they have the skills and knowledge to provide the best care possible. In effect, physicians with ABPS certification distinguish themselves from other noncertified professionals. Recertification serves to further bolster physicians’ professional reputations and credentials by providing an opportunity for them to enhance their skill set and knowledge. By undertaking the recertification process, doctors demonstrate their unwavering dedication to career growth and the advancement of the medical field. What’s more, recertification benefits medical organizations by serving as a positive indicator of qualifications to patients, whose decisions about which medical facility to go to often depend on the credentials of the facility’s doctors.

As an ABPS Diplomate, you will be a respected member of the medical community. For instance, one of our chief priorities is to provide our Diplomates with a voice. We have a long history of working closely with healthcare organizations, legislators, hospital groups, and other stakeholders to ensure that the efforts and ideas of our board-certified physicians are recognized. 

ABPS Offers Recertification in Several Medical Specialties

At the ABPS, we are constantly developing relationships with physician CEOs and credentialing organizations so that we can provide our Diplomates with as many opportunities as possible. We believe that after researching your certification options, you will find that we can best meet your needs, as we offer recertification in many well-established specialties like family medicine, internal medicine, and emergency medicine.

As these physicians discovered, you may find that that the ABPS is more aligned with your values and offers you opportunities not available elsewhere. For example, we offer unlimited board certification verification, attestation, and public confirmation and publish job openings for our Diplomates through the American Association of Physician Specialists Physician Career Bulletin.

Requirements for ABPS Recertification

To become recertified through ABPS, candidates must provide documentation of their ABMS or AOA certification, which must be current or no more than two years past the expiration date. Also, candidates may begin the recertification application process as early as two years before their current certification expires. To recertify with the ABPS candidates must also:

  • Complete a non-remedial medical ethics course
  • Must certify annually that their medical licenses are full and unrestricted in every state in which they practice
  • Pass a 100-question, securely administered written exam in the final year of the eight-year certification cycle

On October 18, 2007, President George W. Bush released Homeland Security Presidential Directive 21 (HSPD-21), calling on our nation, among other initiatives, to “collectively support and facilitate the establishment of a discipline of disaster health”. It is a great testament to the wisdom and foresight of the American Board of Physician Specialties that it immediately set to work and created, within the short span of only one year, an educational blueprint and set of certification examinations, both written and oral, for a new subspecialty of disaster medicine—and it is why I chose to be part this vital initiative and this wonderful organization. This is but one of the many innovative programs initiated by the American Board of Physician Specialties over the years, and why I am proud to support its work on behalf of our nation’s public health.

Far too often, medicine is led by less than 5% of non-practicing physicians taking away and replacing the voice of the 95% of physicians practicing and placing patient safety and care first on the front lines every day. The American Board of Physician Specialties has raised the standards in physician board certification not only in the quality of their boards of certification, but in hearing and allowing for the voice of those active physicians caring directly for patients. Having been a part of the ABPS over the last 28 years has allowed me to grow as a woman leader in a field often wrought with challenges. It helped me and others raise the bar of the standards of care in my specialty, Emergency Medicine, through their Board Certification in Emergency Medicine (BCEM). ABPS also helped raise the standards of care for 21st century medicine through their certifications in other specialties, particularly in Integrative Medicine & Disaster Medicine.
