Why List Your Family Medicine Career Opportunity in the ABPS Career Center?

Career Center Family MedicineIf you are a physician recruiter with an opportunity that you would like to advertise to some of the most highly qualified practitioners of family medicine in North America, then be sure to list the opening in the ABPS Career Center. At the ABPS, we developed the Career Center primarily with two goals in mind. First, we wanted to give physician recruiters far and wide direct access to job-seeking ABPS Diplomates across a range of medical specialties. Family medicine openings are listed in the online Career Center database free of charge and are also distributed via e-mail to ABPS Diplomates through the ABPS Career Bulletin – a popular resource for ABPS board-certified doctors and other medical specialists who are considering a career change. Second, ABPS Diplomates have proven themselves capable of providing exceptional patient care. An important part of our organization’s mission is to facilitate the process whereby Diplomates become notified of exciting career opportunities calling for physician specialists with some of the profession’s highest qualifications.

The Board of Certification in Family Medicine℠ (BCFM℠) is an ABPS Member Board. To be eligible for certification through the BCFM, an applicant must:

  • Possess a valid and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States, a U.S. territory, or Canada
  • Have completed a family medicine residency accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)
  • Submit a report containing a minimum of 10 family medicine cases in which the applicant had the lead management role

All BCFM applicants must also successfully complete a computer-based exam that is administered during a three-week testing window in October of every year. Applicants may take the exam at any one of several testing centers in the United States and Canada. Being highly rigorous, the BCFM application process ensures that only the most highly qualified family medicine practitioners can join this Member Board and become ABPS Diplomates.

The BCFM is committed to the idea that family medicine doctors deserve to have a choice when it comes to certification and re-certification. To that end, the BCFM is a highly physician-friendly organization that actively encourages its members to take part in all matters related to governance and certification. Family medicine practitioners from across North America choose to become board certified through the BCFM because it values their voices and empowers them to help move the specialty in a forward direction.

On October 18, 2007, President George W. Bush released Homeland Security Presidential Directive 21 (HSPD-21), calling on our nation, among other initiatives, to “collectively support and facilitate the establishment of a discipline of disaster health”. It is a great testament to the wisdom and foresight of the American Board of Physician Specialties that it immediately set to work and created, within the short span of only one year, an educational blueprint and set of certification examinations, both written and oral, for a new subspecialty of disaster medicine—and it is why I chose to be part this vital initiative and this wonderful organization. This is but one of the many innovative programs initiated by the American Board of Physician Specialties over the years, and why I am proud to support its work on behalf of our nation’s public health.

Far too often, medicine is led by less than 5% of non-practicing physicians taking away and replacing the voice of the 95% of physicians practicing and placing patient safety and care first on the front lines every day. The American Board of Physician Specialties has raised the standards in physician board certification not only in the quality of their boards of certification, but in hearing and allowing for the voice of those active physicians caring directly for patients. Having been a part of the ABPS over the last 28 years has allowed me to grow as a woman leader in a field often wrought with challenges. It helped me and others raise the bar of the standards of care in my specialty, Emergency Medicine, through their Board Certification in Emergency Medicine (BCEM).
