Verification of ABPS Board-Certified PhysiciansThe American Board of Physician Specialties® (ABPS) offers a fast, accurate, and dependable system for verifying the board certification of our Diplomates. A perfect solution for hospitals, credentialing agencies, and healthcare organizations, our Online Verification Database can provide official verification of ABPS board certification in a matter of minutes.

This online system was developed by the country’s largest and most experienced certification verification organization, Verisys. Within the system, you’ll have access to the physician’s specialty or specialties, certificate number, and expiration date. Additionally, our database contains primary source-verified educational information for most of our physicians, which may be used for credentialing and other professional purposes.

How to Use the ABPS Verification Database

In order to access this system, click here. The first time you visit the database, you’ll be required to create a user account for your organization. On future visits, however, you’ll need to enter only your username and password to log in. Once inside the Online Verification Database, you’ll have the opportunity to search for physicians using last name, first name, and UPIN (unique physician identification number). A limited amount of physician information will be available before you purchase the profile to help you confirm that you have located the correct physician. Each full profile costs $40 and will be billed to the credit card associated with the user account.

Additionally, if you are a member of the general public, we can provide you with free online confirmation about a physician’s board certification with the ABPS. This public database is intended for personal use only and not for official verification or credentialing purposes. To access this database, select “Look up a Provider” under Public Inquiries. Input the physician’s last and first names in the designated fields. If you do not know the first name or are unsure of its spelling, entering a partial name will yield a list of matching physicians. Click on a physician’s name to view their current ABPS board certifications.

Please note that this database only includes physicians with active, unexpired ABPS board certifications.

On October 18, 2007, President George W. Bush released Homeland Security Presidential Directive 21 (HSPD-21), calling on our nation, among other initiatives, to “collectively support and facilitate the establishment of a discipline of disaster health”. It is a great testament to the wisdom and foresight of the American Board of Physician Specialties that it immediately set to work and created, within the short span of only one year, an educational blueprint and set of certification examinations, both written and oral, for a new subspecialty of disaster medicine—and it is why I chose to be part this vital initiative and this wonderful organization. Far too often, medicine is led by less than 5% of non-practicing physicians taking away and replacing the voice of the 95% of physicians practicing and placing patient safety and care first on the front lines every day. The American Board of Physician Specialties has raised the standards in physician board certification not only in the quality of their boards of certification, but in hearing and allowing for the voice of those active physicians caring directly for patients. Having been a part of the ABPS over the last 28 years has allowed me to grow as a woman leader in a field often wrought with challenges. It helped me and others raise the bar of the standards of care in my specialty, Emergency Medicine, through their Board Certification in Emergency Medicine (BCEM).
