Written Examination Dates and Fees
The American Board of Physician Specialties uses computer-based testing administration for all written examinations. Our Anesthesiology certification exams are offered at a network of testing centers throughout the U.S. and Canada and are given during a three-week period in May of each year. The May 2021 testing period runs from May 1 through May 21.
Registration forms will be mailed to approved candidates in February for the May exams. Once registered, candidates can then select the time, date, and testing location that is most convenient for their schedule, which may include evening or weekend hours at select centers.

It is the candidate’s responsibility to be aware of and comply with registration deadlines. In fairness to all candidates, ABPS adheres firmly to its published deadlines for registration and late registration for its exams.
Oral Certification Examination
Candidates for initial certification in Anesthesiology must first successfully complete the written examination before they are permitted to take the oral examination. Oral examinations for applicable specialties are offered once a year in Tampa, FL.
The 2020 Oral Examination in Anesthesiology is scheduled for Saturday, November 14th. Registration forms will be mailed to approved candidates approximately three months prior to the exam date and the fee is $1,600.
If paying by check or money order, please make payable to ABPS. If paying by credit card, ABPS accepts American Express, MasterCard, Visa, and Discover.
Candidates for Written and Oral or Simulation examinations are responsible for arranging and direct remittance of all related travel and hotel accommodations and expenses. ABPS will not be held responsible for expenses incurred beyond the cost of the exam, including but not limited to travel expenses and lost wages.
Candidates are permitted to take both the written and oral examinations (applicable only to the specialties requiring oral examinations), as many as three times in order to pass.
The retake fee for initial certification written exams is $800. Candidates are required to pay the full exam fee for each oral exam attempt.
Certification Management Fee (CMF)
Once certified, all ABPS Diplomates are required to remit a Certification Management Fee (CMF) beginning with the first annual billing cycle after certifying. The CMF is an annual fee that supports the management and governance of the ABPS certification and recertification programs. The fee also supports day-to-day operations of each specialty board, including maintenance of certification standards, board administration, advocacy and brand awareness. Additionally, the CMF defrays the cost to advise and attest to a physician’s board certification status with hospitals and managed care organizations. The 2020 CMF for Anesthesiology Diplomates is $895.
