We are seeking a Physician (Radiology-Diagnostic) for the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System (AFMES). This is a full-time, permanent position with the Defense Health Agency. The ideal candidate will have an interest in forensics. This position offers a comprehensive benefits package, and salary or leave accrual negotiations may be available for candidates new to federal service. A recruitment/relocation bonus and student loan repayment may also be offered.

Key Duties:

  • Perform diagnostic radiology casework in support of the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System, the Defense Health Agency, and the Department of War.
  • Oversee and interpret all radiological examinations conducted by the Forensic Pathology Investigations Division.
  • Lead the oversight and implementation of current Forensic Radiology processes and contribute to the development of new protocols.
  • Maintain an outstanding, authoritative, broad, and intensive knowledge of all radiology modalities, with an emphasis on forensic radiology.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including Medical Examiners, Medicolegal Death Investigators, mortuary affairs specialists, radiology technicians, and IT personnel.
  • Maintain statistical records of workload and participate in Forensic Pathology Investigations meetings and committees.

Qualifications:

  • Citizenship: Must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Degree: Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada accredited by a recognized body.
  • Licensure: Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • Graduate Training: Must have at least one year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting (e.g., a one-year internship or the first year of a residency program).
  • Residency Training: Applicants must have successfully completed the required accredited residency training in Radiology-Diagnostic.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Security Clearance: Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance for the duration of employment. A background investigation is required.
  • Drug Testing: This is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing.
  • Immunizations: Hepatitis B immunization is required due to direct patient contact. Selectees must also consent to seasonal influenza vaccinations or provide a recognized exemption. Proof of other immunizations may be required.
  • Certifications: Must be able to obtain and maintain a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • On-Call Duty: Required to serve on-call for emergency imaging during evenings, nights, and weekends, including holidays. Call hours will not exceed 7 days per month.
  • Probationary Period: The position requires a one-year probationary period.
  • Suitability: Appointment is subject to a suitability or fitness determination based on a completed background investigation.

On October 18, 2007, President George W. Bush released Homeland Security Presidential Directive 21 (HSPD-21), calling on our nation, among other initiatives, to “collectively support and facilitate the establishment of a discipline of disaster health”. Far too often, medicine is led by less than 5% of non-practicing physicians taking away and replacing the voice of the 95% of physicians practicing and placing patient safety and care first on the front lines every day. The American Board of Physician Specialties has raised the standards in physician board certification not only in the quality of their boards of certification, but in hearing and allowing for the voice of those active physicians caring directly for patients. Having been a part of the ABPS over the last 28 years has allowed me to grow as a woman leader in a field often wrought with challenges.
