Physicians Who Seek Board Certification Can Choose ABPS for Rigorous, Clinically Based Exams
Any organization that offers board certification for physicians must ensure that the medical board exam is developed and administered to accurately reflect a physician’s mastery of the knowledge base and skill set in his or her selected specialty. To that end, the Member Boards of the American Board of Physician Specialties® (ABPS) employ rigorous standards for the development of content within their written and oral examinations.
The ABPS received independent affirmation of the high standards of its exam content through an exhaustive practice analysis study performed by Castle Worldwide. This well-respected testing agency concluded that the ABPS certification programs “meet or exceed the equivalent standards of any other certification organization.” What this means is that physicians who achieve certification through the ABPS can be sure that their core body of specialty knowledge has been thoroughly and fairly tested, and that the result will be an accurate demonstration of their abilities and knowledge.
Exams Emphasize ABPS Mission to Enhance Patient Care
The physicians and public members of the ABPS specialty boards develop and administer physician certification and recertification exams for 21 medical specialties. Many ABPS Member Boards are constituted or governed by Diplomates from ABMS and AOA. It is the mission of the ABPS to focus primarily on enhancing patient care, rather than on the business of medicine, and every exam our boards administer reinforces that commitment. In line with that mission is our pledge to promote collegiality, fraternity, and public service among our Diplomates, all of whom are given the opportunity to contribute to future exam development and administration.
Board Certification Recognizes Excellence and Commitment
Achieving board certification is a significant accomplishment, one that reflects both exceptional skill and strong professional dedication. Because the process is demanding, those who earn certification are viewed as leaders in their specialty. As a result, they often stand out to employers and benefit from greater career opportunities and higher earning potential.
If you’re a licensed physician considering board certification in your field, the ABPS invites you to explore certification through one of our Member Boards. As a nationally recognized multi-specialty certifying organization, the ABPS has Diplomates practicing in communities across the United States.
How to Apply for ABPS Certification
To qualify for board certification through the ABPS, candidates must meet general and specialty-specific requirements. These include graduating from a recognized allopathic or osteopathic medical school, holding a valid and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the U.S., its territories, or Canada, and adhering to the ABPS Code of Ethics.
Physicians must also be actively practicing in their chosen specialty. Additional requirements vary by specialty and may include completing an accredited residency, previous board certification, relevant clinical experience, or fellowship training. All applicants must pass a written exam, and some specialties also require an oral exam. These standards ensure that ABPS-certified physicians demonstrate the knowledge, skill, and ethical commitment necessary to deliver exceptional patient care.
