The ABPS is a Recognized Choice for Physician Board Certification

The American Board of Physician Specialties® (ABPS) is a nationally recognized physician multi-specialty certifying body that offers both allopathic and osteopathic physicians board certification options in a variety of specialties. Because board certification is one of the highest honors that physicians can receive, certification with the ABPS is a rigorous process. In addition to meeting numerous eligibility requirements, candidates must pass a comprehensive specialty certification exam. Together, these requirements ensure that only the most skilled, knowledgeable, and committed physicians become board certified.

As medical knowledge and technology continue to advance, more physicians are narrowing their focus in certain medical subspecialties. Not only that, more hospitals than ever are prioritizing hiring board-certified physicians as a way to differentiate themselves from the competition.

The ABPS believes that, as with other industries, more competition leads to more innovation and improvements. By providing physicians with another recognized choice for board certification besides the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) and the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), and by being advocates for our Diplomates, we promote competition that can lead to better patient care.

It is essential in today’s competitive marketplace for physicians to choose a board that can offer them the widest range of professional opportunities. At the ABPS, we take a pragmatic approach to certification that enables physicians to gain personal and professional advancement while meeting today’s increasing demands for patient care. It’s no wonder that our Diplomates are considered thoughtful leaders in their specialties and practice in all 50 states, as well as Canada and Puerto Rico.

In addition to being more marketable to employers, ABPS Diplomates:

  • Join a distinguished community of physicians dedicated to providing exceptional medical care
  • Help to bolster the reputation of medical organizations
  • Exchange information about clinical experiences in order to advance their specialties
  • Instill patients with confidence that they will receive the best medical care available

The ABPS offers physicians several unique opportunities for board certification. For example, physicians who have extensive experience working in emergency departments, but who completed their residencies in a primary care field, can earn board certification in emergency medicine with the ABPS without needing to complete an additional residency. We’re also committed to emerging public health issues, which is why we’ve developed innovative boards in disaster medicine, integrative medicine, and family medicine obstetrics, among others.

Patient Care Is Our Priority

Medical organizations throughout North America understand that our rigorous certification standards prove that ABPS Diplomates are capable of delivering the best patient care possible.

When I think historically, advancement in medicine and patient safety and care has been driven by the diversity of people and scientific thought. That’s what I found at the ABPS and more. For over 60 years that is just who we are. I found a physician certifying body that provides a choice and voice to all physicians ensuring that patients are always placed first.

When I decided to pursue a full time role as a physician executive it was important to me to obtain additional professional training, education and work experience. Board certification through the ABPS in Administrative Medicine is validation of my efforts and a demonstration of dedication to professional development. We need more physicians to become full time health care executives, knowing there is a board certification option in Administrative Medicine encourages physicians to take the leap from full time clinical practice to healthcare organizational leadership.

The American Board of Physician Specialties has provided me with the opportunity to demonstrate mastery of internal medicine through board certification. As a hospitalist, board certification is an expected credential, and hospitals recognize the American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS) as one of the three standard credentialling bodies for Internal Medicine. Additionally, the ABPS has helped me develop leadership skills as a Board member and Committee Chairperson. ABPS has also helped me sharpen critical thinking skills as a test question developer and reviewer. The Allopathic (MD) and Osteopathic (DO) physicians in the ABPS are lifelong learners and frequently pursue multiple board certifications. I enjoy the camaraderie of my peers in ABPS.
